>>> Update Guide |
The purpose of this page is to detail how this wiki's pages are created in order to keep its articles consistent when new pages about similar subjects/items are required.
Update Histories
Update Histories are used on pages for agents, abilities, maps, weapons, and game modes. They document every change made to the subject they are used on, including bugfixes. Almost all changes will be documented on the official patch notes, though on very rare occasions some changes either do make it through to live without being included on the official patch notes or with different numbers to what has been stated on the official patch notes.
- For the wiki, the changes documented in Update Histories do not have to be an exact copy-paste from the patch notes; they should be edited if necessary to be as short and concise as possible given the limited size of the scroll box.
- This means that written context for some changes seen on the patch notes is not included in Update Histories.
- Every change will also use an icon from Template:Update Icon (Shorthand: ui) to give a visual aid on whether the change is any of the following:
: Buff, for changes that objectively increase the power/strength of an item or positively affect players of a game mode.
: Nerf, for changes that objectively decrease the power/strength of an item or negatively affect players of a game mode.
: Adjustment, for changes that either have no overall effect on power/strength or simultaneously has positive and negative effects on the item.
: Bugfix Buff, for bugfixes that act as quality of life changes that fix issues that were causing the item to be less powerful than intended.
: Bugfix Nerf, for bugfixes that act as exploit fixes that were causing the item to be more powerful than intended.
: Bugfix, for bugfixes that have no overall effect on an item's power/strength or simultaneously has positive and negative effects on the item.
: Added, for new additions or updated effects e.g. model updates.
: Removed, for changes where items or functionality are removed from gameplay.- Whilst these icons will be used for every change on most items, for maps and game modes these may also be used for the patch itself if the vast majority of changes fall under a single icon (i.e. you would put the icon with the patch to prevent using the same icon several times with every change within a patch e.g. Competitive#Update History)
- For changes to agents' update history, each change will be sorted by patch notes, then categorized under the ability it's changing.
- If the change either doesn't affect an individual ability or affects multiple, these should be listed at the top of the patch's entry first.
- Use Template:Ability Icon Text (Shorthand: abi text) for abilities.
- If uncertain what to do in specific cases, try to look for relevant examples in agent update histories to ensure consistency.
- Changes mentioning maps should not be included in update histories for agents or abilities even if the change mentions an ability, as the change is likely only specific to the map and not the agent/ability.
Patch Notes pages
The majority of this page is made up of a copy of the official patch notes which are then edited to fit the wiki's page format and include wiki links/images.
- This page also uses Template:PatchNav to navigate to the previous and next patches. For the latest patch, you can put in the number for the next patch even though it hasn't been released yet and there isn't a page for it; the template will keep that part blank until the page for the next patch is added, at which point the template will update to include it.
- You can use Template:Agent Icon (Shorthand: ai) for agents and Template:Ability Icon Text (Shorthand: abi text) for abilities.
Infobox
All patch notes pages use infoboxes from Template:Infobox patch to show the following data:
- image: All images used here should fit the format "Patch Notes Highlights X XX.jpg", where X XX is the patch number e.g. 4 04. The image used to represent this patch is the official patch infographic taken from the official patch notes. If the official patch notes does not include an infographic, the image used to represent this patch is instead taken from an official patch video rundown instead. These are usually screenshots of a comparison or new addition from the video. These videos can be found on the Youtube accounts for most of VALORANT's global accounts, such as VALORANT Brasil, France, Germany, Italia, and Russia & CIS (This does not include VALORANT Korea as they produce different patch videos).
- date: Date of first patch release (NA/SA regions)
- act: Episode and Act
- changes: List of major subjects that received major changes affecting gameplay. If the only changes to the patch were bugfixes or quality of life changes, this section should only state "Minor patch" instead. Night Market appearances are also documented here. For major changes, this sections can list the following:
- "Agent/map release/rework"
- "Agents"
- "Weapons"
- "Maps"
- Any Game Modes (e.g. "Competitive", "Deathmatch")
- bundle: Cosmetic bundle(s) released this patch
- pages: Link to official patch notes and any other official VALORANT news articles that are relevant to additions/changes brought by this patch. For patches that result in a new act, this will include the "What's New in Episode X Act X" article.
Agent pages
- e.g. Brimstone
The base format of these pages can be found at Template:AgentPage
Infobox
All agent pages use infoboxes from Template:Agent Infobox Shortcut (Shorthand: agib). This is a content-moderator/administrator-only page in order to reduce vandalizm as Agent pages are often targeted for this purpose.
- Aliases should only be used for nicknames specific to the agent e.g. Brimstone's "Brim" or Raze's "Tatá". It is not intended for generic terms that have been used to describe the character.
- Affiliations should be for any company or organization the agent has been a part of listed in chronological order.
Biography
The Biography tab is a lore-based description about the character and the major events that shaped their life, written by us at the wiki as there are no official Biographies about agents' past.
- Refer to the agent using their real name at first, then switch to their codename when recalling events after they became an agent of the VALORANT Protocol.
- This section is only meant for major points of interest, minor involvements and side stories in their lives don't need to be mentioned here (see Timeline of Events).
- Think of this section as something comparable to the official Biographies of League of Legends Champions; these list the core moments in a champion's life that led to them being who they are in the present day, but do not list every minor encounter or action that they've been seen doing within the lore.
The Timeline of Events tab documents every appearance or mention of the agent within VALORANT lore. This is where more minor points such as small emails and voicemails can be added.
- This tab is usually organized into sections, starting with two for "Early Life" and "VALORANT agent", and more depending on what other parts of the lore they have appeared in.
- All sections should be posted chronologically as well as all points, though some ambiguity for the order of some points within a section means that the order may only be able to provide an estimate and is not guaranteed to be exactly chronological (this is most notable for Early Life).
Abilities
This section uses Template:Ability info for most standard abilities. More info on how to use this template can be found there.
Gear
This section uses Template:AgentGear. More info on how to use this template can be found there.
Trivia
- The Development section should be for any trivia relating to the agent before their release to the live version of the game. This includes pre-beta info, concepts, and info from interviews with voice actors talking about their time creating the agent's quotes.
Gallery
Images included in an agent's gallery should be placed in the following order of their release; the first media being the earliest and the very last media being the latest.
The following are accepted in this section:
- Lore-related images and cosmetics
- Note: Be wary that Omega Agents' appearances are not included here. For example, images of a Jett in DUELISTS would not be included on Jett's agent gallery because the Jett in DUELISTS was the Omega counterpart.
- Any images not specifically related to lore, cosmetics, or development
- Development and early concept design images
- Teaser images
Ability pages
- e.g. Incendiary
Description
This section should not include any numbers; this should be left for the infobox and Stats section instead. Where you would want to use numbers, try to use other words or phrases such as "after a short/brief delay", or "several seconds". Numbers should only be used if they are so core to how the ability works that it is required in order for the description to make sense.
Images to showcase what the ability looks like in-game: equip, cast, activated. Certain abilities also include, but not limited to: summoning, primary and alt fire, triggered, flash, windup.
Stats
This section documents all the number values relevant to the ability, excluding those that are already included in the ability's infobox (charges, credits/ult points, cooldowns/restock).
- Stats are generally sorted in "chronological" order of what stat/value is relevant as you equip and cast the ability.
- Most stats numbers will only be able to be found at first by testing in game or finding the values within the game files (Path: ShooterGame/Content/Characters), though they may eventually appear over time in patch notes when they receive updates.
- All stats must try to be officially confirmed and not estimates. If confirmed, they should receive a tick (
) in the Confirmed Value column and state the source within the abbreviation HTML element. Stats are still allowed to be included and estimated even if they cannot be confirmed from an official, Riot-affiliated source, but they must be tested as accurately as possible in game and the Confirmed Value column for this stat must be marked as a cross with an asterisk (where the asterisk indicates a note at the bottom of the section for its unconfirmed value but has been tested) (
*) instead.
- Ideally, the primary source for confirmations should be patch notes (as this is the most accessible source to wiki readers), then in-game verification, then game files.
Weapon pages
- e.g. Classic
Summary
This section should not include any numbers; this should be left for the infobox and Stats section instead. Where you would want to use numbers, try to use other words or phrases such as "high damage" or "moderately-priced". Numbers should only be used if they are so core to how the weapon works that it is required in order for the summary to make sense.
Cosmetic Collection pages
- e.g. Prime Collection
Weapon Skins
- In a table, skin image sizes should be 125px for all weapon skins except Classic, Frenzy, Sheriff, and Melee skins, which should be 75px.
- Variants should be set at a smaller 75px by default and 50px for Classic, Frenzy, Sheriff, and Melee skins.
Upgrades
Kill Banner
- The Kill Banner is made from 4 parts found in the game files: A background ring, an emblem, a background frame, and a kill pip.
- This can be assembled together using image editing software.
- The wiki's standard is to just show the banner as it would appear on first kill using one kill pip at the top of the ring.
- In the files, if some parts of the banner appear to be missing from the collection's specific folder, it's because the banner uses parts from the kill banners of other collections instead. You can check which parts are used by other collections in KillBannerData files for the collection.
- For Kill Audio, the wiki takes each individual audio files and uploads it unedited, then creates an additional 'Successive' audio file that adds them all together.
- You will need to use audio editing software to create the successive kill audio file playing each one in order. These are not usually just each individual audio file added one after the other, some of the silent space at the end of each kill is removed to make the successive file shorter and quicker.
Upgrade Effects
- Upgrades tables list all noticeable changes that can be seen when comparing the official skin spotlight videos.
- Commonly used points are:
- New model VFX
- New equip VFX and SFX
- New inspect VFX and SFX
- New muzzle flash + gunfire VFX and SFX
- New slash VFX and SFX (for melees)
- New gunfire animations
- New reload VFX and SFX
- New Kill Banner and Kill SFX
- Final kill of the round plays a finisher animation
- Some of these points may also include animations.
- SFX changes relating to a change in material used for the weapon not included.
- New SFX should refer to additional sounds unrelated to the physical actions of handling the weapon during inspects or reloads.
- Commonly used points are:
- Underneath the upgrades tables is a gallery to show off VFX and provide visual aids to other effects mentioned in the tables:
- For gun effects, only one weapon should be chosen to showcase any VFX. Prioritize Rifles>SMGs>LMGs>Sidearms, then weapons without a suppressor.
- In general new animations without VFX are not included in the gallery, but if it helps provide a visual aid to a description from the tables you can add one image at a key frame of the animation.
- If uncertain what to do in specific cases, try to look for relevant examples in previous Upgrades tables and galleries to ensure consistency.
